Kia Kaha

Your child is currently taking part in the programme Kia Kaha.  This is a programme developed by the NZ Police Youth Education Service which is designed to help create positive classrooms.

It is being taught by class teachers, with help from Constable Carl Musto, our local Police Education Officer.

To be successful, Kia Kaha needs your help and support at home, so that you can reinforce messages children are getting and help your child use his or her new skills with confidence.

Parts of Kia Kaha explore the definition of ‘bullying’. The identifying features of bullying:
  • It is deliberate, hurtful behaviour
  • It is often repeated over a period of time
  • It is often difficult for those being bullied to defend themselves
  • It is difficult for those who bully to learn new social behaviours
  • The bully has, and exercises, power over the victim
  • Cyberbullying can be disseminated very quickly to a wider audience
The aim of Kia Kaha is to create an environment where all members of the school community feel safe, respected and valued, and where bullying cannot flourish.

Please let me know if you would like to be part of our class Kia Kaha sessions.

Cardboard Gingerbread Houses

Dear parents/caregivers,

This term in Visual Art, the Ara Teina children will be exploring concepts of construction as they first learn how to make a 3D house from cardboard using a template, then bake and decorate an edible gingerbread house – from scratch!

Students will explore 2D and 3D shapes, nets and templates, develop cutting and piecing skills, and be given time to show their creative flair while decorating their houses.

We would love you to assist us in creating these houses!

Here are a few examples of cardboard and real gingerbread houses to give you an idea of what we’re planning to create with the children.

How you can help…

If you can donate any of the following items we would be most grateful. PLEASE SEND THESE IN TOMORROW.

  • Either a medium sized cardboard box (please flatten it) OR a piece of firm card (around 40 x 30cm in size)
  • Stickers, pom poms, pipe cleaners, and buttons that can be used to decorate the model house
  • Hot glue sticks
  • Masking tape

Tomorrow we will start constructing our prototypes out of cardboard. We will need parental assistance for this. We will be doing this during last block (2-3pm). If you are able to help out with this please let me know.

Parent Help

Thank you to all the parents who have offered to help out with Room 24. I’ve listed the different ways you can help below. Catch me before or after school and I can set you up with something to do.

-We always have pencils that need sharpening. This can be done at home or school.

-Ruling margins in our maths and language books.

-Shelving readers in the resource room. This is a half hour job that needs to be done once a week.

-Gluing poems into poetry books.

-Throughout the rest of the term we will be doing a lot of construction in class as we build our gingerbread house prototypes out of cardboard and then the real thing out of gingerbread. Hands-on parent help will be greatly appreciated with this. I’ll let you know dates of when this will happen soon.

House Prototypes

Today we learnt about prototypes and templates. We used a 2-D template to make a 3-D house. We cut the templates out very carefully and then folded on the dotted lines.
