One Day A Taniwha

Ara Teina will be singing this song in assemblies. We have been practising it in class. It would be great to practise singing along at home.

Science Learning

Our science focus for the next fortnight is Spring and Resistance. We started by looking at some objects and predicting if they would be stretchy or not stretchy. We used words like bendy and flexible. Then we tested them to see if we were correct.

We talked about things that are elastic. Elastic things always return to their normal size and shape.

Homework task: Find something at home that is stretchy and/or elastic. If you can... bring it into school and add it to our table of stretchy things!

Reading Homework

Every night your child should bring home 2 books to read.

GUIDED READING
Your child will have guided reading with the teacher at least twice a week. Please read these books for the next two nights to increase familiarity and confidence in their reading.

CHOOSING BOOKS
Every morning, before school starts children can choose one or two books from their group box. These can be swapped as needed. They should all be at a slightly easier level so your child can read independently. This will increase their reading mileage, fluency and confidence.

POEM
Each Friday we will do a poem as a whole class. These are glued into poem books and can be taken home over the weekend.

LIBRARY
Our library day is Friday and children are expected to borrow a new book each week. Please make sure they are returned to the library before school starts.

Please sign their homework notebook each time they do reading at home.

Each child has taken home a bookmark with some strategies to help them when they get stuck with their reading. These can live in their book bag. Encourage your child to use these strategies to help them become good readers.

Spelling homework will begin in the next couple of weeks.

This Tuesday - Look forward to seeing you there!

Swimming

This week during swimming we experimented with the best ways to make our body float and sink. We enjoyed floating like a pencil and sinking with our legs crossed.

Then we learnt how to play Stuck in the Mud in the water.

Playground

2016 is the Chinese year of the monkey. We thought about how monkeys move and then went to the playground to try for ourselves. We all tried to be brave and try something that we've never done before as well.

Measurement

This week we learnt how we can use different units of measurement. We used a range of objects to predict how tall how buddy would be, then measure them to find out. We discovered that the tallest person in the class is Vansh and the shortest person is Prisha.

Welcome to Room 24!

Here’s some important information about our class.

Spare Clothes – Please bring in a set of spare clothes for your child in case we have any incidents. These can be named and kept in a plastic bag on hooks in the cloak bay.

Hats – Arahoe has a ‘No Hat - No Play’ policy during Term 1 and 4. Children without hats will not be allowed to play in the sun during intervals and lunch. Please ensure hats are named.

Swimming – Our swimming time for Term 1 is Wednesday after lunch (12-45-1:15) each week. Please send your child to school with togs and towel no matter what the weather is like, in case it becomes fine for the afternoon. Ensure all uniforms and clothes are named.

Blog  Everything that parents and caregivers need to know this year will be posted here on our blog. It will be updated at least once a week.
