Wrapping Up Term 2

Well done to everyone who dressed up today! It was cool to see all the Kiwiana clothing. Just a couple of things for the end of term.

- Library: All library books must be returned to the library before the holidays. Those who were away or involved in the Maui and the Sun rehearsal will need to return books before or after school.

- Books: It would be good to get reading books back. Please choose a few for the holidays but any readers that are no longer being used, need to come back to the class so that they can be sorted over the holidays, ready for other people to read next term.

- Matariki Performance: On Friday there will be a whole school performance in the hall at 10:30 to celebrate Matariki and our learning around this. Some Year 2 children will be doing a play about Maui and the Sun. The performers from our class are Fletcher, Aaron, Francine, Isabel, Noah and Guru.

Fractions

On Friday we learnt how to find one-half and one-quarter of a shape or a group of objects. We practised with things in the classroom, then we had to choose one thing from our lunchbox and find one-half and one-quarter of it.

Music

In class we have been learning how to listen to a piece of music. We listened to lots of different types of music and had to think about 3 things:
1. What instruments and sounds can we hear?
2. How does this piece of music make you feel?
3. If this music was playing in a movie, what would be happening?

So we decided to make our own movie by using these two pieces of music to inspire us!

Orbit

One of our big questions about space was "Why are things in space orbiting?". Today we did an experiment to see how something can stay in orbit.

In our hypothesis, we thought that the water would fall out of the bucket. Shivkrant was the only one who thought that it would stay in the bucket. Turns out he was right!

We concluded that the water in the bucket was still falling; the bucket was just falling as fast as the water. When we slowed it down, the water was falling faster than the bucket, so it came out!

This is how the Moon orbits the Earth. The Moon is falling but the Earth is moving too. And because the Earth is round, the Moon will just keep falling in a circle around it.

Try it at home! All you need is a bucket with a handle and some water.

Mimio

Today some of our learners were able to try out the Mimio screen in the library. Their challenges was to find as many different nouns (people, places, things) as possible in their library books. Then they had to write these up on to the screen. They found so many nouns that they filled up 3 whole pages!

Moon Phases

This week we have been learning about how the moon changes. Over 4 weeks the moon goes through lots of phases which all look different. Yesterday we made these phases out of oreo cookies.
First we wrote down all the scientific names for the phases. Then we carefully cut the correct shapes and put them on our diagram.

Froggies

Thank you to everyone who has brought in flies for our frogs! Especially Quinn, Louis, Kerisha and Claire. Remember Phineas, Ferb and Perry like to eat flies and daddy long-legs spiders. They will be staying in Room 24 for a couple more weeks so keep bringing in that food.

Constellations

Today we learnt that a constellation is a group of stars that make a pattern or a shape. It is like a giant dot-to-dot picture in the sky.
We made our own constellations by connecting dots on a piece of paper. Then we chose an awesome name for them.
Finally we went outside and drew our finished constellations on the ground in chalk. Check out some of our creative shapes:
Stardough - Fletcher

The Crayer Fish - Isabel

Pirate Ship - Melanie

Broken Hill - Lucas

Sellotape - Claire

Conshon - Francine

The Wonky House - Azra

Kite - Aaron

Torch - Claire

Kerisha - Kerisha

The Gun - Azra

Maximo - Guru

The letter 'm' - Aaron

Angler and Skinner - Emily

The Pirate Ship - Mia

The Gold Boat - Noah

The Great House - Kayla

Subzero - Shivkrant
