Sumdog Champion

The Room 24 Sumdog Champion is not decided by who has answered the most questions... but who has answered the most questions CORRECTLY. Try to overtake the current champ by playing Sumdog at home as well.

The photo of our current champ will be displayed on the right of our blog.

Friction

Our science topic for the next few weeks is friction. Today we brainstormed everything that we already know about friction, then we did a short experiment on different surfaces.
Here are some videos about friction.

Storytime

Today we had some special visitors from New Lynn library come and do Storytime with us in the library. We learnt how we can get our own library card from the library. Ask your child if you are interested in doing this.

Gravity Art

This week we are exploring gravity. This afternoon we used gravity to make some colourful art. We dipped some objects in paint and then dropped them from different heights. This made different splashes, shapes and textures.

Sir Ray Avery

During whole school assembly we had a very special visit from Sir Ray Avery. He is the inventor of the Lifepod which is what we are fundraising money for. We thought the lifepod looked like an alien ship. But we were very impressed that it can help so many babies stay alive.

Reading

Catherine and Kaity have been reading a pretty funny book during quiet reading time. Today they shared it with the class. Thanks girls - we loved it!

WITS

Today in Circle Time we learnt about how to use our WITS.
Kids, it would be great to explain to your parents how you can use your WITS at school and at home.

Spelling City

Exciting News!

We will be using SpellingCity for word study in our classroom and at home. SpellingCity is an educational website and app that allows students to practice their spelling and vocabulary words through engaging activities. Access SpellingCity online at www.spellingcity.com or by downloading the SpellingCity app from iTunes, the Google Play Store, or the Amazon Appstore.

You can find our class’ vocabulary and spelling lists by going directly to my SpellingCity homepage at https://www.spellingcity.com/missconnollyarahoe/.

Bookmark this web address on your computer to make it easy for your child to access the class’ word lists. Your child does not need to log into the site to access my homepage.
Our class’ word lists will appear on the left side of the page below my welcome message.

On the web, students select a list by clicking on the list name. They can then complete the Spelling TeachMe activity by clicking each word on the list, select the Play A Game button to practice their words using any of SpellingCity’s free activities, or select the Spelling Test button to quiz themselves on their words and help them prepare for any upcoming tests.

On the app, students can search for our class’ word lists by clicking the More Lists button on the home screen and searching by Teacher Name. Once the lists have been loaded, they can select a list, then select an activity to practice their words.

SpellingCity’s activities and games make word study fun while helping students build
confidence and learn independently. Working as a team will go a long way toward guiding our students to academic success and ensure they become lifelong learners.

Sumdog

This year for maths homework, Year 2s will be using Sumdog. This is a free, game-based programme which can be used to support the maths skills that children are learning in class.

It can be accessed online at www.sumdog.com OR download the app onto any device.
I would recommend using Sumdog for a total of 30 minutes each week.

Every child has their own personal login with username and password. This has been glued into the back of their homework book. The school code is arahoe-school.

Any questions about this, please come see me before or after school. I'm happy to show you how to use this if you need help.

Bake Sale

REMINDER: Bake sale tomorrow. Bring a gold coin and buy a treat to have with your lunch!
